Embroidered vest

Mary Nohilik

Duffle wool, embroidery thread

c. 1950

This vest was made by Mary Nohilik of Cambridge Bay in the 1950s. Around this time, the embroidery of colourful, typically floral, designs on parkas, mittens and boots became an Inuinnaq fashion that endures to this day. This ornate fashion was inspired by Inuvialuit and Dene groups further to the West.
